Substance Abuse Counseling, Certificate

The Certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling prepares students for job preparation in entry level positions in alcohol and drug counseling and the curriculum is a pathway to the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Substance Abuse Counseling. The course work is designed to meet the educational requirements of the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists of Alcohol and Drug Trainee.

Program Outcomes:

  1. Identify major theories and techniques commonly used in the field of addictions counseling.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in basic counseling skills such as therapeutic approaches and techniques used with individuals, groups, families, and communities in addictions treatment.
  3. Apply strong written and oral communication skills in a professional environment in order to clearly communicate with clients, families, and colleagues and to maintain required records and documents.
  4. Choose and practice appropriate professional behaviors according to ethical codes and legal standards of professional organizations such as, NAADAD, ACA, and NASW.
  5. Examine the neurophysiological role of substances on the brain and body and the effects on behavior
