HUM-220 Comics and Graphic Novels

Considered one of America's contributions to the arts, comics has a rich history from early political cartoons and satirical strips to a new American mythology of superheroes and villains that have become ubiquitous in our cultural conversations. In this course, students will understand comics as an artform, as cultural artifact, and as a literary mode of communication. Students will also explore the progression of comics and sequential art, tracking changes in the medium through the historical, social, cultural, and economic backdrop of the time in which specific works were created. Works to be studied will include selections from early and emerging comic strips, comic books, underground comix, alternative comics, graphic novels, graphic memoirs, independent comics, and web comics. Manga may be addressed for its influence on modern American works. * Arts/Humanities Approved General Education Course.
